Bolt, Nut, and Washer Grade Compatibility Chart

Reference

It can often times be confusing as to which grade of fastener you should use in conjunction with grade 5 and grade 8 hardware due to the different designations. For example, should you use a grade C nylon insert lock nut with grade 8 hex cap screws or a grade A one?  It is critical that you choose the recommended combination of ancillary hardware for grade 8 and grade 5 hex cap screws, plow bolts, carriage bolts, etc. because depending on the circumstances, a set is only as good as its weakest link!

Do not worry though! We at Hanover Fasteners have compiled a reference list demonstrating which “grade” of nuts, washers, lock nuts, and lock washers go with which grade of bolt.

*This list is NOT exhaustive. Additionally, different distributors will label products by alternative names. We have chosen the titles most commonly used in the fastener world as well as what appears on our website.

*Not all hardware uses the term “grade”. Their corresponding correct labels are used on the store and in the breakdown to the left.
